The Library(Tutor Contact: Joe Ronayne , House Librarian)The Robert Ellsworth Gross Memorial Library contains over 10,000 volumes, subscriptions to 25 magazines and 3 newspapers, and a collection of CDs, vinyl LPs, and sheet music, along with growing collections of videos, DVDs, and popular fiction. There is also a CD player, a cassette deck, and a turntable for listening to recordings in the library. Some tutorial leaders leave material on reserve. From the librarian, you may check out pingpong, foosball, air hockey, and pool equipment, keys for practice rooms, or keys for the SCR and Pottery Room (if you are on the list of approved users of these rooms), in exchange for your Harvard ID. Donations of movies and books are welcome at any time; please leave them with the librarian on duty. Suggestions for new additions to the library, especially to the movie collection and the popular fiction collection, are also welcome. The Library phone number is 5-1730, and the website address is http://mather.harvard.edu/library/index.html. Lists of movies, CDs, magazines, newspapers, and popular fiction are available on the website. Library Hours Sun.-Thurs. 12:30pm-12:30am Fri.-Sat. 12:30pm-6:30pm Three Columns Gallery(Contact: Ann Waymire, Curator of the gallery: Lance Keimig)Mather is the only Harvard House apart from Adams that has its own in-house art gallery --- Three Columns Gallery, in the foyer space you walk through as you go in from the courtyard and up to the dining hall. The mission of Three Columns is to make art an integral part of the daily life of House residents. We hold approximately six showings per year, including a showing of Mather student art at the end of the academic year to coincide with Arts First. We also welcome student curators and student artists for some of the other shows through the year. Non-student exhibitions showcase the work of professional artists in the Harvard community and the broader Cambridge-Boston area. Three Columns Gallery is curated by respected artist Lance Keimig. Check out the latest exhibits Weight Room(Tutor Contact: John Collins)The newly refurbished Mather weight room offers a wide selection of cardio equipment, complete sets of free weights, multiple weight-training machines, and numerous calisthenic aids. Compared to other house weight rooms, ours is among the largest spaces and most extensively stocked. Twenty-four hour access, wall-to-wall mirrors, a stereo system, and magazines make Mather weight room a homely and attractive alternative to the MAC. Please contact Matt DePetro ‘05 or Neal Sinha ‘06 with questions and see Jackie Wheeler, Assistant to the Masters, for a $10 key (remember: proceeds from key sales go to upkeep of the weight room, so please don’t skimp!). Copy MachineLocated outside of the library, the copy machine costs five cents per page and it takes Crimson Cash. This machine is a shared convenience for the House community so please be careful with it and notify the House Office of any problems.Computer Lab & Computer AssistanceThe Lab is located on the second floor of the office wing, right above the library (use the outdoor staircase between the library and the House Of- fice). It has several computers, including Macintosh and PC models, connected to the FAS network, scanners, a laser printer, and a typewriter. Network accounts and printer budgets can be set up at the Help Desk in the Science Center basement or by calling the information line at 5-9000. The printing charge is five cents per page. The Mather User Assistants invite you to contact them with questions at mather-help@fas.harvard.edu (or dewolfe-help@fas.harvard.edu for DeWolfe residents).Junior Common Room (JCR)The JCR is a student lounge located directly across from the commons- area wing and is equipped with a DVD/VCR/TV combo wired for cable, a small kitchenette, an upright piano, and a tournament sized ping-pong table. Ping-pong paddles can be checked out from the library in exchange for your Harvard ID. Use of the JCR is on a first-come, first-served basis, unless it has been reserved by a Mather resident on the calendar outside of the library. The doors to this room are always locked; you may gain access with your ID card. Dinner parties and other small gatherings in the JCR must end by 2:00 AM on weekends and by 11:00 PM on weekdays. Students using the room are responsible for cleaning the area and any equipment they have used. Please keep the refrigerator and working surfaces sanitary. The kitchen must be cleaned by 8:00 PM if a private party has been scheduled for the evening. There are private suites directly above the JCR so please be aware of your noise level at all times. The playing of amplified instruments in the JCR is prohibited. The CommonsBig TV Room Grille Game Tables There is a 52-inch television in the big TV room with cable, a DVD player, and a VCR. There is a 25-inch television in the grille area with cable and a VCR. Above these areas, Mather offers a pool table, air hockey, and foosball. Game equipment may be checked out from the library in exchange for your Harvard ID.Tranquility Room(Tutor Contact: Eyal Aviv)The Tranquility Room is a very nicely refurbished room on the second floor of the administrative wing, which we have set up as a quiet space for members of the Mather community to use. We make the room available to groups, and also to individual Matherites, who can get a key from Jackie Wheeler ($3 deposit). The room has been used in the past for meditation, yoga, prayer and Alexander Technique classes. It is open for any reasonable quiet, contemplative or relaxational use, and makes a great retreat from the usual hectic round of Harvard life. The only restrictions on the use of the room are that it be used in a way consistent with its intended purpose as a quiet retreat, and that individuals yield to regularly booked groups. Music Practice Rooms(Tutor Contact: Na’ama Lion & Patrick Lam)Two practice rooms are located above the JCR: Room A houses the harpsichord and upright piano and Room B houses the baby grand piano. Two additional rooms are located down the hall from the weight room. House residents may sign up for practice rooms on the reservation sheet outside of the library. Please note that individuals can only make same-day reservations. Groups interested in a regular practice time must visit the House Office. Keys to the practice rooms may be obtained from the library or, when the library is closed, from the Superintendent's Office. Those on the grand piano permission list (see music tutor for details) may use the Steinway Grand in the Senior Common Room, which can be reserved on the calendar outside of the library, or the Yamaha Grand in the Masters' residence, which can be used by arrangement with the Masters. The Hubbard harpsichord is available for student use (with permission). Our harpsichord tutors are Todd Beckham and Peter watchorn. Wood-Turning StudioMather has a wood-turning studio equipped with a lathe. For a small fee, Harvard affiliates may explore and develop their wood-turning talents.
